Between Worlds: Pin Hsun Hsiang, Paul McCarthy, Huajie Zhang

This July, Rockford Gallery proudly presents Between Worlds, a group exhibition featuring three artists. Chinese-born artists Pin Hsun Hsiang and Zhang Huajie, who migrated to Australia, navigate the intersection of Chinese and Australian cultures. While inheriting the rich artistic traditions of China, they have also undergone transformation through the influence of Australian culture. Australian artist Paul McCarthy is known for his restrained and contemplative style, capturing subtle balances between avant-garde experimentation and the mundane rhythms of everyday life.

Positioned within the space between cultures and artistic practices, the three artists construct diverse creative contexts through their distinctive perspectives. This exhibition is a visual dialogue on identity, boundary-crossing, and cultural fusion.

Huajie Zhang

Zhang Huajie (b. 1965, Xi'an) is a distinguished multidisciplinary contemporary artist and scholar whose visionary practice seamlessly dissolves the boundaries between painting, cinema, and theatre. Holding a PhD in Fine Arts, Zhang first gained international acclaim as a core cinematographer for Zhang Yimou’s cinematic masterpiece Hero, mastering the orchestration of grand-scale visual narratives and dramatic color theory.

Driven by his pioneering "Visual Field" theory, Zhang’s work is characterized by a profound sensory synthesis and social engagement, spanning monumental public sketch projects and durational live performances. His recent practice is deeply connected to the Australian landscape; during his residency, he revived an Indigenous mineral pigment system, utilizing charcoal ash from burnt timber in the Blue Mountains, natural ochre, and crushed shells. Through this unique methodology where "material is language," his celebrated Mountain and Sea series explores the poetic tension between human existence, deep time, and environmental shifts.

An award-winning independent filmmaker and acclaimed painter, Zhang’s works are held in prestigious public institutions and private collections worldwide, including the Asian Art Coordinating Council (USA), Xi'an Art Museum, and prominent collections across Spain, Japan, and Australia.
