Huajie Zhang
Zhang Huajie (b. 1965, Xi'an) is a distinguished multidisciplinary contemporary artist and scholar whose visionary practice seamlessly dissolves the boundaries between painting, cinema, and theatre. Holding a PhD in Fine Arts, Zhang first gained international acclaim as a core cinematographer for Zhang Yimou’s cinematic masterpiece Hero, mastering the orchestration of grand-scale visual narratives and dramatic color theory. Driven by his pioneering "Visual Field" theory, Zhang’s work is characterized by a profound sensory synthesis and social engagement, spanning monumental public sketch projects and durational live performances. His recent practice is deeply connected to the Australian landscape; during his residency, he revived an Indigenous mineral pigment system, utilizing charcoal ash from burnt timber in the Blue Mountains, natural ochre, and crushed shells. Through this unique methodology where "material is language," his celebrated Mountain and Sea series explores the poetic tension between human existence, deep time, and environmental shifts. An award-winning independent filmmaker and acclaimed painter, Zhang’s works are held in prestigious public institutions and private collections worldwide, including the Asian Art Coordinating Council (USA), Xi'an Art Museum, and prominent collections across Spain, Japan, and Australia.
