Description:
Naples Yellow – the earliest use of the term is thought to be between 1693 and 1700. References to giollolino di Napoli appear more frequently from the beginning of the eighteenth century. The colour has a reputation of being “pleasing, light, warm, yellow tint”, but with many drawbacks. Not withstanding its drawbacks Naples Yellow remains indispensable for many artists. In 1904 the post-Impressionist Paul Cezanne upon seeing a fellow artist’s palette bereft of this pigment, was thunderstruck at its omission. Excerpt “The Secret Lives of Colour” by Kassia St Clair
