SHEN Jiawei | Figures in History · Figures Here and Now

SHEN Jiawei has always been utterly captivated by the sweeping sagas found within history books, envisioning himself as a painter who brings the historic narrative to life. Throughout his career, SHEN has dedicated himself to capturing the past with his brush and canvas, a journey that led him to a significant realisation: he is fundamentally a portrait artist at heart.

His artistic journey brought him to Australia during his middle years. Armed with nothing but his talent, SHEN embarked on a path of making a living through his art. He drew both tourists and locals, his brush gradually capturing the likenesses of influential figures, from prime ministers to religious leaders and royalty. Over the years, SHEN's artistry has amassed a collection of faces that history will remember, retelling truths, lives, and connections with a style that evokes the essence of times past. Indeed, he is a true painter of historical narratives.

As time progressed, SHEN came to understand that those he painted were not merely subjects, but icons of history in their own right. This realisation highlighted the true essence of his work: he is a historical painter, capturing fleeting moments on canvas and etching transient events into the annals of time. Each face he paints, whether belonging to unconventional strangers or gentle newcomers, embodies a unique universe; each portrait is a testament to a moment in time. SHEN commemorates these moments, weaving the essence of life through storytelling and artistic exploration, and intertwining his own narrative with the fabric of history.

This exhibition invites viewers to reflect on our collective role in history. As observers and participants, we may be mere specks in the cosmos, yet each of us harbours a universe within. SHEN's work serves as a reminder of the joy and significance found in both portrait and historical painting—a celebration of both the individual and the collective, the transient and the eternal.

In exploring SHEN's narrative, we see a reflection of our own—each of us a part of a larger history, yet distinct in our essence. His legacy encourages us to look beyond the canvas, to recognise our place in the continuum of time, and to celebrate the myriad faces that together weave the rich tapestry of human history.
