Lisa Rochfort
Lisa Rochfort works in her country studio, ‘Yarrenbool’ in rural NSW in a township called Manilla. The name comes from the Gamilaraay language, it is said to mean ‘winding river’. A better terrain could not be found for an artist embedded in the subtle tides and rare patterns of the natural world. “I see patterns everywhere; I can see them as clear as numbers. I count the spaces between the stems. If you see a hill-scape I see a thousand blades of grass. Nothing is static, everything is in perpetual movement.” “Ceramics are very thirsty. Painting into them is like working on an un-primed canvas. You also have to consider the discovery of the form. You begin with the curve and then you meet the curve. Here is the antithesis of the square where a landscape is flattened. A vase follows the subtle swell of the earth, the movement of light across its skin. It is a vessel carrying the image as well as the mystery of the void within.” - Lisa Rochfort
