Jianhua (Justin) Qian

Born in Nanjing, China, QIAN Jianhua was classified as one of the “Educated Youths”. After graduating in Nanjing University of the Arts in 1978, he became a lecturer in at an university in Suzhou. He created a number of major artworks including a large granite sculpture called ‘Mother and Child’ that went on to be exhibited in the city of Suzhou as well as a white marble sculpture named ‘Textile Goddess’ that was displayed in the city of Shengze. Justin first came to Australia in 1991 as a visiting scholar and subsequently immigrated to Sydney, where he continues his practice as an artist to this day. His sculptures was awarded the the Wynne Prize at Art Gallery of NSW in 2006, the Blake Prize in 2007, and the Blacktown Arts Exhibition First Prize in 2004 and in 2006. QIAN JIanhua had also exhibited in Sculpture by the Sea in 2007 and 2008. He was also commissioned by the City of Sydney to design the Horse lantern that was exhibited as part of the Chinese New Year Festival in Circular Quay in 2016 through 2019.
