There is art in the formation of a subject. Jacqueline’s works are full of drama and colour, with the play of light drawing the objects together, taking the viewer’s eye deeper into the painting with warm reflexions and the curves of an Oriental vase. Her limited palette gives the feeling of simplicity and calmness; background design being important in the overall mood. The Cherry blossoms may be a mass of complex petals but white petals are anything but plain white when lit in her studio: touches of pinks, greens, mauves and reflexions from a red tabletop, but satisfyingly serene. Her garden grows the Fuji Cherry tree, the japonica, nasturtiums twining beneath some roses, marching Zinneas and red gum blossoms. Jacqueline says that “plein air” painting for years, with the problems of catching the changing sunlight is comparable to working in her studio with spotlights on flowers that can move to different positions or wilt. She studied under Graham Moore and Ming Mackay although her use of colour is her own and innate in her being. Integral to her works are the vases, silk wall hangings, screens and objects that have been part of her family life, from living in Japan as a young child and finding pieces in auctions. She feels Still Life painting is timeless and transcends the modern fashions. Painting is her joy.”
