Greg Mallyon
My paintings are inspired by an aerial view of the world below......the amazing patterns and shapes created by nature whether they be snaking rivers, waterholes, salt lakes in the desert, the microcosms of coastal rockpools and tidal inlets as well as evidence of human industry and habitation. I use a combination of my own travel photographs and sketches, satellite images and aerial photographs, maps and computer scans of natural forms such as bark, lichen, rocks, and leaves. From these multiple sources I create paintings that evoke the multiple layers of the earth. Recent paintings explore the Victorian goldfields region in which I live. Autumn and winter are times of rich ochres, red ,browns and greys of the vegetation and the geology .It is an ancient landscape as well as an important region in Australia’s colonial history.
