Dana Dion

Born in Israel and growing up between there and East Africa and Canada, Dana Dion studied art at the Emily Carr University in Vancouver and then moved to London in 1995 where she studied at the Hampstead School of Art. A full time artist since 2005, Dion works on a large scale with painterly verve, an intricate line and a nuanced palette. Honoured with the Hunters Hill Regional art prize in 2018 and three major art prizes in 2017: The Art Extra Guy Warren Art award, The Gosford art prize and Art in the Hills Acquisitive art prize, her work is collected internationally. Dion defines her work as a place of both discovery and intrinsic communion: “Painting a landscape creates, for me and hopefully my viewers, a sense of shared ownership and belonging: a connection, a duty of care, and common experience. Intuition of the landscape and boldness drive the work. The art aims to capture the interaction of branches, trees, vegetation, rocks, hills, lakes and water. Trees, for example, create “windows” to the view beyond; encapsulating the intimacy of the Australian landscape: the slow-moving flux of trees, leaves and branches, disappearing and reappearing, and the subtle changes in light, space and texture.””
