Sheila Lyne

The ceramicist and print maker Sheila Lyne evokes marine life at it’s most intricate. The artisan skill of her hand wrought forms dwells in fragile detail and a distinctive bleached palette. Working in the coastal NSW town of Kiama, her meticulous clay sculptures reveal ocean secrets and have abstract presence quite distinct from their descriptive origins. Physically they are rich with contradictions: brittle yet tactile, whimsical and monumental, painterly and sculptural. Small scale sculptural work occupies an underestimated and possibly overlooked place in contemporary art, but even in that context these works hold their own. Presenting a level of finesse and loving detail that sustains and rewards the eye. “My hand-built pieces are inspired by the ocean and coastal landscape of my local environment in Kiama, Australia. I work intuitively from memory, drawings and photographs to create re-imagined, fanciful aquatic forms.”
