My practice as a ceramic artist has its basis in sculpture. Many inspirations come from nature, deconstructed and distilled to the simplest of forms. I’m currently working on assemblages and compositions influenced by Alexander Calder’s mobiles. My sculptural compositions have a minimalist aesthetic, consisting of simple elements that use gentle movement, light and shadow play to engage in a new way... creating a kind of silent poetry. The sculptures are made using various clays, surface treatments and mixed media, which build complexitiy into the compositions. The pieces are handbuilt using a combination of slip-casting, press-moulding and slabbing techniques from raku, stoneware and porcelain clays. My sculptures explore sculptural concepts, using movement, tension and balance expressed through the juxtaposition and repetition of three simple ceramic forms. My aim is that they inspire an appreciation of composition and form and remind us of the beauty within our natural landscape.
