Martin Campbell

Martin Campbell

Martin Campbell is a marine artist who is adapting and re-inventing the contemporary energy of the urban foreshore. His work moves between the industrial grit of Sydney harbour, the rugged ocean cliffs of the coast, the placid reaches of the Hawkesbury River and the moody waters of Hobart. Working from his studio in Balmain, Campbell is an exhibiting member of the Australian Society of Marine Artists and also takes frequent painting expeditions into the landscape with the Australian Plein-Air Artists Group. His attraction to industrial subjects dwells in their subtlety: “the intriguing texture and vibrant colour which you might not notice at first glance.” Working in oils for a furrowed richly colourful impasto vision, Campbell takes the element of water into new realms, from the more obvious iconic blue oceans and harbour scenes that have denoted the Australian seascape.
