Libby Mewing is a Sydney based artist moving between home and Jervis Bay who delights in the process of creating abstract work which she hopes will intrigue and captivate the viewer. Words like intuitive and spontaneous are often used to describe abstract art and artists. However, Libby prefers to describe her painting process as a conversation with her canvas or paper using polite, gentle gestural marks and then as the dialogue deepens, she employ greys, blacks and white to form a basis and history of communication. Colour is introduced …sometimes in a very limited way and texture forms when layers are applied, constantly widening and developing the conversation. Often 2 or 3 works are done in tandem therefore creating quite a discussion ! Quiet and calm areas always feature in her paintings giving the viewer a chance to rest and enjoy some peace amongst the activity. Libby doesn’t consciously take inspiration from objects or landscapes but invariably her mood and sense of place become apparent. She has benefitted from some excellent teaching both in Australia and France where she has completed several residential courses with Rogine Doré and Thibaut de Reimpré who have had a considerable impact on her artistic sensibility.
