Jan Howlin is a Sydney-based ceramicist, currently working at One+2 Artist Studios at 6 Mansfield Street, Rozelle. She likes to hand-build sculptural objects as she wants the form to tell the story, to allude to ideas and meaning through its three-dimensionality. Having studied at Sydney College of the Arts, Jan is a well respected artist. Her interest in form and how it presents itself as a physical challenge and its distinct difference in impact of two-dimensional imagery is what drives her work. The ideas that motivate each piece for Jan change, but they are usually about people and everyday life, things that can build on the connections between us as humans. She likes the work to be light even if the subject matter is heavy, something that can be taken smiling even if the fact is grim.
